video marketing The use of cable television to promote and sell products and services.

virtual concierge Information about services for travellers and a link between a guest and an area; available through websites and accessed via computer in a hotel room or lobby, or at-home before a trip.

visible component The part of the service-benefits bundle that can be seen.

visitor An individual engaged in tourism who can be a same -day visitor or tourist (visitor who stays overnight).

visitor attraction A place, venue, or activity that attracts visitors, provides an enjoyable way for them to spend leisure time, is developed and managed to realize this potential, and provides facilities and services to serve their needs, demands, and interests.

voluntary chain A group of independent hotels that join in association. (See referral group.)

voucher A coupon or document exchanged for tourism products such as accommodation, transportation, gratuities, etc.

wait list A list of passengers waiting for a vacancy on a fully booked airline flight.

WAP technology Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) enables consumers to access websites without a computer or telephone lines.

water-based tour operators Operators of water-based activities, most of whom have agreed to a code of ethics that fosters an environment of cooperation and trust, the safety and understanding of their passengers, and the protection of the marine environment and its wildlife.


water-based vacations Features outdoor recreation involving lakes, rivers, and oceans, such as swimming, sailing, canoeing, scuba diving, and fishing.


webcasting The practice of pushing out corporate and marketing website information to online consumers rather than waiting for them to find the website on their own.

Web community A website that caters to a particular group of individuals who share a common interest.

wholesale distributor Suppliers in the channel of distribution providing products/services to other suppliers or retail distributors such as travel agencies.

winter vacations Vacations to adventure destinations or attractions during the winter, such as skiing, an escape weekend at a country inn, or the beaches of Prince Edward Island.


work orders Directions, written or sent electronically, that advise engineers and maintenance staff what needs to be fixed on a daily basis and notifies them about routine inspections that need to be undertaken to keep everything functioning properly.


workshop A small group session of intense study or training that emphasizes an exchange of ideas or demonstration of skills.

yield management The use of pricing and inventory controls, based upon historical data tracked through managing electronic information systems, to maximize profit by gauging rates in response to demand for product/service offered.

youth hostel A facility that offers basic overnight lodging at rock-bottom prices for younger travellers.

youth standby fares Fares available through Travel Cuts for young people who are willing to wait for available seats rather than pay to fly on a specific flight.

Zoo A zoological garden; place where animals are kept for showing in confined area.
