joint venture A business partnership between two companies, two individuals, or a company and an individual.

K

key word A form of on-line advertising linked to Web portals or search engines so an ad appears each time a consumer initiates a search using the key word.

kilometre cap A car rental plan that allows clients a certain number of free kilometres each day and charges an extra fee for each additional kilometre driven.

L

land/cruise package A vacation package that includes cruise and hotel accommodations at or near the port of embarkation.

leakage The amount of income that flows out of a local economy to purchase outside resources needed to generate that income.

learning-type product Attractions and experiences that add value to life, such as adventure travel, aboriginal tourism, and cultural tourism.

lecture A formal presentation in which an expert addresses the audience from a platform.

leisure Freedom resulting from cessation of mandatory activities, especially time free from work or duties.

leisure attitudes A learned predisposition to respond favourably or unfavourably towards leisure generally and specific leisure activities.

leisure behaviour Activities that provide relaxation, active and passive enjoyment, release from daily life, and recuperation through refreshment and renewal.

leisure motivation Motivation in varying amounts to escape or to seek something through leisure pursuits.

leisure participation The degree to which individuals participate in leisure pursuits is influenced by education, income, marital status, gender, leisure repertoire, preferences, motivation, attitude, satisfaction, and age.

leisure repertoire The number of activities a person engages in during leisure time. It is dependent upon opportunity, age, state of health, and attitude.

leisure satisfaction The satisfaction gained from leisure pursuits, ranges from having physical competence to knowing that you are the best you can be in some leisure pursuit. It comes from specific activities as well as engaging in leisure activities generally.

leisure services system The system made from combining the leisure services provided by the commercial, private not-for-profit, and public recreation subsystems.

light rail transit (LRT) A modern form of mass transit, usually several transit cars travelling together on a dedicated separate rail right of way from suburb to city.

lighter See tender.

limousine A privately owned and operated chauffeur-driven car, often hired for special occasions or for business purposes.

linear route A flight pattern in which an airplane flies to its destination in one direction, turns around, and repeats the flight in the opposite direction.

liner An ocean-going passenger vessel that runs over a fixed route and on a fixed schedule.

loading apron A parking area at an airport terminal where the airplane is refueled, loaded, and boarded.

local residents People residing near a particular place as opposed to regional and destination visitors.

local tour A tour that is marketed to a local group or organization.

lodging categories Based upon size, price, location, facilities and amenities offered, physical layout, affiliation, ownership, and the product provided, there are five categories of lodging: hotels, conference and convention centres, lodging with entertainment components, lodging affiliated with parks and recreation, and lodging affiliated with health care.

loss/damage waiver (LDW) An option offered by car rental firms that relieves clients of their liability for an initial amount of damage to a rental car; it also provides coverage for loss of the use of the rental car should an accident occur.
