APPENDIX C

OCCUPATIONAL STANDARDS & CERTIFICATION

What are Occupational Standards?

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council, in consultation with industry experts from across Canada, has established national occupational standards documents describing the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to perform successfully in specific tourism occupations.

In addition, many of the National Occupational Standards contain essential skills that help people be successful in an ever changing workplace. These skills include:

  • computer use
  • continuous learning
  • decision making
  • document use
  • finding information
  • job task planning
  • numeracy
  • oral communication
  • problem solving
  • reading text
  • use of memory
  • thinking skills
  • working with others
  • writing text

National Occupational Standards can benefit YOU! There are standards for over 50 tourism industry occupations -- from baker to tourism trainer. It is possible to achieve professional certification in many of these occupations.

What is Professional Certification?

Professional Certification means that an individual has successfully demonstrated a level of competence in a specific occupation - an achievement that is recognized throughout the sectors of the tourism industry across Canada. Contact CTHRC or your Local Contact for information about certification in one of the occupations identified. You will also learn how professional certification benefits both employers and employees and about the certification process. Workbooks and other
